Police identify drivers in fiery crash

North Carolina Highway Patrol has identified the two men that were killed in a violent fiery crash on Hwy 74 this week.

The  collision happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday after a driver traveling west in the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 74 struck a sport-utility vehicle causing a fire that burnt both vehicles and a stand of nearby trees leaving a dark black spot near Brickyard Road
“It was bad out there last night,” Trooper Mark Helms said.

Highway Patrol identified the wrong-way driver as Patricio Osvaldo Valdivieso, a 52-year-old Charlotte resident. The other driver was 58-year-old William Jerry Odom of Tyrone, Ga.

According to the report of Trooper J.D. Wilson, Valdivieso was traveling in a 2002 Ford Explorer when he hit Odom’s 1997 Ford Expedition.

Wilson estimated the SUVs were moving at 55 mph, the speed limit in the area, when they struck each other.There was no indication that either vehicle braked.

“They met right in the crest of the road and it’s possible that they never saw each other until it was too late,” said N.C. Highway Patrol district secretary Janet Ross.

Both drivers were dead before the Highway Patrol arrived, Helms said.

Police can not say at this time if alcohol was a factor in the accident until after the medical examiner’s report is released which could take more than a month to get.

 ”Due to the way the bodies were burned, I don’t know if they can determine if alcohol is involved,” Helms said.

Helicopter called for Davis Road accident

Union County NC July 10 2009

A vehicle accident on Davis Rd Friday afternoon injured several people and caused traffic problems.

Authorities said that a vehicle flipped and rolled and trapped two people inside at around 3:45pm.

Firefighters from Wesley Chapel and Waxhaw along with Union County EMS, sheriff units and the NC Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

One person was critically injured and was flown to CMC hospital by helicopter.

Authorities have not released the name of those involved.

Local mayor won’t run for re-election

UNION COUNTY NC JULY 10 2009

As mayors and other local politicians file their intentions to run for positions within the county including re-election, Wesley Chapel Mayor Tracey Clinton announced that she has no plans to run for re-election.

Wesley Chapel Council has faced two controversial decisions and struggles with the local volunteer fire department and gun control. The council denied the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department a permit to build a new station. The VFD plans to appeal that decision and may bring a lawsuit against the village. The Village Council also passed an ordinance limiting the use of firearms within village limits.

A local landowner challenged the ordinance in court and has been granted a temporary injunction allowing him to flout the village rules.
But Clinton said that neither of those battles played into her decision to back out of politics. She said that she had decided some time ago not to run again and to offer her support to Councilman Brad Horvath in his bid for mayor.

Clinton is also the president of the Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association, which is in the middle of its own struggles over floodplain issues at Optimist Park. Clinton said she will maintain her position there, at least until the floodplain issues are resolved

Weddington Mayor Nancy Anderson said she has not made a decision yet as to whether she will run for re-election. Anderson has until noon on July 17 to file for re-election.

As of now, two others have filed to run to be Weddington’s mayor. Ken Evans and Barbara Harrison have both submitted their paperwork to the county elections office.

Marshville Mayor Frank Deese and Lake Park Mayor Kendall Spence have filed to run for re-election. Others still have a week to decide and file the necessary papers.

Gas leak closes county business

Waxhaw NC July 10 2009

An emergency call came into the County 911 Center Friday morning reporting a possible gas leak at an area business and that triggered a full response of emergency workers.

Union County officials say that the Waxhaw Family Physicians at 3614 Providence RD. reported that several people were getting sick in their office and that they suspect a gas leak in their building. Union County EMS and several fire departments responded to the call as workers and patients evacuated from the business.

EMS personnel said that they treated five persons on scene as fire personnel checked the building and notified gas department personnel to respond.

Authorities said that no one was injured or transported to the hospital and emergency personnel cleared from the scene.

Chamber of Commerce speaks out on utility increases

The Union County Chamber of Commerce has spoke out this week against the electric and water rate increases imposed by the Monroe City Council this year. This is no time to raise rates and hurt our citizens further the Chamber said. But Mayor Bobby Kilgore reiterated that there was little the city could do. Cost increases were imposed on the city, he said, and it could not absorb the higher costs this year. Kilgore said that the city already cut its budget by 11.5 percent this year, and that it experienced utility cost increases every year since 1996, but raised rates only in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2009.

“We didn’t want to do it,” Kilgore said. “But we had to.”
A letter was sent out to each of its members after Chairman Ron Sumrow met with Kilgore to discuss the rate increases.

“Our representatives made it clear that any cost increases to local businesses in this economic climate are detrimental,” the letter reads in part, then explains that rate increases were nonetheless necessary, in order for the city to maintain its current service levels.
Angry industry leaders criticized the move, saying it would cost more jobs and could lead to industries looking elsewhere when expanding.
Kilgore pointed out that Monroe was still in the lowest 15 percent of North Carolina electric rates and lowest quarter of water rates. He called Monroe economically attractive to businesses and industries.
“We have a good business community,” he said. “I would still consider Monroe very industry friendly.
